Nature’s Gifts: Weekly Walk on a Monday Morning

When I went out for my weekly walk this morning, I had no idea where I was headed or what I was going to explore. But, within a minute or two of walking, I noticed these fruit-like matter growing from a tree just near my house. And, these are what I ended up noticing in my walk today – fruit-like things along the streets of my suburban neighbourhood.

I noticed a lot of flowers too, like the one pictured below. But then, flowers always catch my eye. I just haven’t used it as a ‘theme’ for my walk just yet. Maybe because I don’t really think it’s a good idea to pick flowers from my neighbours’ gardens without their permission. 😉 So, the only way I ‘collect’ them is through taking photos.

One thing that’s really striking me at the moment during my walks is my lack of knowledge and vocabulary when it comes to naming things from nature. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of varieties of flowers, plants, and trees that I see outside. Yet, I don’t know what most of them are called. And, I’m not sure how or where to start when it comes to getting better at that sort of thing.

I mean, over the years, I have collected some knowledge. But, definitely not enough for me to know what most things are when I see them while I’m out and about. I’m hoping to remedy this bit by bit.

What I do know, however, is that I’m loving the inspiration that’s coming from these weekly walks.

Found flower from Monday Morning Weekly Walk No. 3. Reminding me that when it comes to nature, I lack the knowledge and vocabulary to name the things that I see. More about the walk later. Hope you have a fabulous start to the week!

While I never got around to sketching last week’s ‘walk finds’, today, I didn’t just manage to take a photo spread of the collection, I also got to sketch the items AND do two new things after my official work day was over:

1. Create a colour palette from my ‘walk finds’ spread. If you notice the photo at the top of this post, there’s a colour palette that was inspired from that spread. It was created through the Adobe Color app on an iPad. I have been playing around with the Adobe apps on the iPad since I started doing digital art again. And, I just discovered recently that I can create colour palettes in different ways through the Color app. One way is by doing it ‘live’ – as in, allowing the app to find a colour palette based on what the camera is focused on. Then, capturing a palette that you like. It’s quite cool, so I thought I’d try it on this spread. Just to see what kind of colours I’d get – and if I can use the colour palette.

2. Create digital art graphics based on my sketches and the new colour palette. Yes, it all came together when I started sketching and I saw certain forms that made me think about digital graphics. With the colour palette already there, I thought, why not? So, I imported my sketches to Adobe Illustrator on my Surface Pro and started processing them. Here’s the set that I came up with:

GiftsFromNatureNot sure yet what I’d do with these graphics – if I’m doing anything at all. I considered making a pattern out of them, and was even playing around with repeats. But, my initial effort wasn’t quite working how I like it so I decided to leave it for now. Maybe one of these days, I’ll revisit.

For now, I’m just glad that my walk today gave me so much more than what I expected.
